Laila & David’s roof extension
A second floor extension to a semi-detached, two-storey, 1920s house in the Muswell Hill Conservation area to create two additional bedrooms and a shower room.
The second floor extension involved a hip-to-gable roof conversion with the addition of rooflights on the front roof pitch and a dormer on the rear. On the outside, the bottom of the dormer was set up from the eaves, the cheeks set in from the gable and party walls, the top down from the ridge, and is clad with finely detailed standing seam black powder-coated aluminium sheet cladding to minimise the apparent size of the additional volume.
Conversely on the inside, built-in desks, shelves, cupboards, and beds maximise the use and apparent size of the spaces. Large windows make the most of daylight and views. Tall perforated screens add depth to views and allow natural ventilation while maintaining safety and security. An origami like black powder-coated folded steel plate winding stair inserted between the existing first floor landing and new second floor transforms the everyday journey to and from the roof extension into one of delight.
